Renaissance Jewelry

While paintings and sculptures from the Renaissance are widely known, few have ever encountered its jewelry.

In fact, only a small number of Renaissance jewels survive today.

Precious metals are almost infinitely reusable.

Gold and silver can be melted and recast — and thus, most Renaissance jewels were sadly lost to time, reborn in new forms.

The few that remain were often preserved by chance, discovered centuries later in shipwrecks or hidden chambers.

With the great maritime discoveries of the 16th century,

gemstones from across the world began to flow into Europe.

Diamonds arrived from India, and emeralds from Colombia.

This newfound abundance of materials quickly propelled advancements in craftsmanship. Like painting and sculpture, jewelry entered its own Golden Age.

Goldsmithing demanded meticulous skill and was regarded as the ultimate training ground for young apprentices to refine both their dexterity and artistic sensibility.

These workshops were not limited to jewelry alone; they produced an array of gold and silver objects, from devotional pieces to tableware.

Apprentices typically began their training around the age of ten, studying for nearly eight years before earning the title of master.

Many of the great Renaissance artists, in fact, began their careers as goldsmiths before turning to painting or sculpture.

Even Leonardo da Vinci spent his early years apprenticed in a goldsmith’s workshop.
